Final

Final Assignment
http://craigslistdesign.blogspot.com/

What I would like to see in this class:

More on website design theory
Printing out designs you like and sharing them w/ class discussion
More stories about designing in the real world

Overall, this class was enjoyable & it gave me confidence knowing I'm capable of designing websites. That was my ultimate goal.
Now I'll have to start working on a personal website for my art & a website for my band.

12/8/08

This is what you get when you type in Craigslist.org into the navigation bar of your search engine.

It looks unattractive but it's simple and useable.

The text design is appealing to some, but I feel like this site deserves better.

I have a whole different take on how take on how I think this website ought to operate. I feel like it should involve more community and personal interaction.

You have the option to keep old craigslist & not sign up for an account. You could find information about apartments in London and contact sellers through email. And that could be the extent of your experience. BORING.

With mycraigslist, you'd be able to chat/interact with locals in different communities. You'd be able to find the best deals, get referrals from your neighbors, browse lists together with your friends. Social interaction with others would bring the fun. With a personal account, you can get recommendations about items of interests, organize all the junk you want to sell onto a list, keep track of items you're looking at. There's potential to make craigslist a hot commodity. In the new age, you want to find the best deals online. the craigslist community could unite people through online bartering / communication. This could lead to a return of strong values, like being a good person. Good people will help out other people, like giving donations to the less fortunate

An argument against this redesign/thought is, if it isn't broken... why fix the website? It might be straight to the point. But what if craigslist was improved in its enjoyability factor. Browsing and hooking up with others would keep people coming back.

The calender will remind you of any significant events coming up & events you might be interested in. You can try to organize your life.

Local listings will bring up items you are watching and listing. Whoever is online in the local community is available to chat/bargain for items that might be on your list. You also might have a greater chance of connecting with that 'missed connection' from the subway. Just be careful of stalkers and sexual deviants.

The layout and personal settings can be altered with different colors and positions of boxes. You could play around, upload your picture, become a local hero.

Although, craigslist works fine the way it is. Why not consider change ? Change is good.

11/24

Last night while I was going to sleep I saw something like this in my head. I am most creative after midnight when I'm engaging in conversation with myself.

This is my first real draft of the craigslist page.

I thought the suggestion of incorporating "mycraigslist" was brilliant.

November 3rst

I want to try and redesign craigslist.org

It has a simple layout but I feel like it could use herb and spice.
Craigslist needs an aesthetic kick in the ass without sacrificing its simple navigation.

the other website I would like to redesign, not so much, is the NY State DMV.
There's a ton of info for this one & could use improvement.

Both projects are challenging.

I hope McCain wins Tuesday, so I can participate in the NYC riots.

thank you

Web Server - software that delivers(serves) HTML webpages to a web browser

Application Server - software that has specific role to do certain things

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) - a way of exchanging files between computers over the internet

DNS (Domain Name System) - system that translates Domain names into IP addresses; a human can type in a domain name, and DNS will translate that name into an IP address. The internet is based on IP addresses.

CHMOD file permissions - set permissions on how much access should be permitted to certain files on your web server

dammit i don't like feeling sick
i hope that when i wake up tomorrow i will no longer have the sniffles or a stuffy nose
a combination of sleep, medication, and positive thought should do the trick
god bless me

Semantic Web is going to progress the Internet to the next level
at the pace technology is going... this change is come in my lifetime

the world is going to change when computers are going to do ALL the work
'intelligent agents' will analyze data on the web and change the tech/market environment
I'm worried about the possibility of our every day lives being handled by machines

my concerns:
I don't want any censorship of the information i'm receiving &
I hope no one takes away free speech on the internet

QUESTIONs for RICK:
why'd you choose your profession ? is there a satisfaction?
how does the economy affect you and your business?
how do you feel about the future of web-design?

shit, i feel like i've seen a lot in my lifetime and i'm only 21.
with the economy going downtown... i wonder what's next
great depression? world war 3? terrorist strike? natural disaster? end of the world?
i wanna see some chaos

I've been busy pursuing my interests but,
Im anxious to start playing with Dreamweaver
the only way to learn something is to play with it, make mistakes and learn
also, practice, practice, practice
I'm looking forward to designing a new website my personal art & my band.
I want em to be professional & perfect.. I want to draw ideas on paper & translate em to Dreamweaver.

September 22th

If you haven't found out yet...

Paper prototyping works because it's sufficient, efficient, and proficient.

No really, it works very well for many reasons.

It allows you to be creative... you can do what you want, how you want.
Being creative is what's up
It'd be ideal to create different versions of something beautiful& receive feedback on whatever was working.
When you got a design that's happening, it's time to show off.

Communication is important to a relationship & it's key to composing a tight design.

The best way to communicate your design/usability ideas is through an interactive visual presentation.  Using a realistic prototype will uncover any issues or problems.
It saves time & money. Quite a value.
Any alternatives can be suggested and other priorities can be addressed.

It works.

a team that works together wins together (Go Giants!)
Individual hustle, team communication, & charismatic leadership wins championships.
if you're losing you gotta fix the problem.
Criticism is not for the weak... I like criticism because it's REAL talk, it helps me improve myself.
if you're on the same team You gotta be REAL with each other because you gotta put out the best product.

Don't settle for mediocrity
